About me

Top quality, professional translation from Danish to English. Communication, clarity and creativity.

NIGEL WARRINGTON
TRANSLATOR

I read English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford (BA, MA) and studied theatre directing at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Following a busy and eclectic career as a theatre director and teacher of acting in the UK, USA, The Republic of Ireland, Denmark, Germany and New Zealand, I turned to translating and have been working as a full-time translator of texts from Danish to English for 14 years, employed on a regular basis by a number of major translation agencies in Copenhagen.

My work covers an extremely wide range of fields:

I can confidently tackle virtually anything

Given my background and interests, I favour texts of a cultural or artistic nature, but I can confidently tackle virtually anything that does not require highly specific technical, scientific or legal knowledge and honestly turn down any task for which I lack the required terminology or understanding. When offered a project, if I know I cannot deliver my usual high quality, I say “no” immediately. My agency clients include major Danish institutions and companies.

My own regular personal clients range from artists, art galleries and municipalities to the Utzon Center and Kunsten Museum of Art in Aalborg (catalogues for major exhibitions, website text, material for exhibition use etc.). I translated Flyvefærdig – Ole Ahlberg for Galerie Wolfsen in Aalborg, Supertrends and Bubbles, Bears and Bullshit by the Danish entrepreneur, investor and multimillionaire Lars Tvede and Beats, a book by the internationally-acclaimed Danish artist, Anders Moseholm. Other major clients include: Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg; the Utzon Center; the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek; the Royal Danish Opera; the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Visual Arts; Art Hub; Brandts (Odense); Louisiana Museum of Modern Art; Horsens Art Museum; Skagens Art Museums; Ribe Art Museum; the National Gallery of the Faroe Islands; and a number of Danish commercial galleries.

If a Danish company, institution or individual wishes to promote a brand, service or product in English, it is because it is of huge importance to them. My responsibility as a translator is equally huge. A client pays me to deliver a professional service – they deserve the very best. Accuracy and attention to the facts are of course crucial. But translation at its best is much more than that. This is where my creativity enters the picture. I draw on my academic and professional experience and knowledge, and on the wealth of vocabulary that English provides to cut through the Danish text and the structures of the Danish language, departing from them to create something new. I always rewrite the first draft of a translation at least once until the text achieves the right flow and rhythm when read out loud. I find it immensely satisfying to apply all I have acquired from a ‘life with words’ to produce a translation that does not, and absolutely must not sound like a translation.

As a native speaker of English with a degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Oxford and a background in theatre, I can guarantee my clients an outstanding command of the English language, great clarity and elegant style.

I am known for my boundless energy and my ability to deliver quick results. I am more than happy to work at ‘unsociable times’ if necessary and have a terrible tendency to take my work with me on vacation! Flexibility is my middle name.
